Direct Support Professional – Job Description

SUMMARY: Assists consumers with developmental disabilities to achieve personal goals and to become fully engaged in their community by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Guides individuals to become fully engaged in their community as independently as stated in IP.

Encourages and accesses participation in community activities, church, social events, entertainments, recreational opportunities, etc. of the individuals’ choice.

Entertains by reading aloud, playing games, conversing, working puzzles, watching television, etc.

Encourages positive attitudes and personal awareness by discussing concerns and setting a positive example.

Encourages independence and household responsibility by engaging the individuals in cooking, cleaning, laundry, budgeting, shopping, etc.

Encourages proper grooming and personal hygiene and offers assistance as needed.

Prepares nutritious and well-balanced meals in accordance with dietary requirements.

provides or arranges transports to activities, medical appointments, events, etc.

Follows nursing care plan, behavior plan, individual plan and other guides related to the consumer.

Administers medications and treatments according to written direction of Physician and as directed by the delegating RN.

Complies precisely with the supervision requirements as stated in the consumer’s individual and behaviour plans.

Provides personal care and treatments as stated in the nursing care plan.

Possesses positive approaches to redirect consumer to productive outlook.

Documents services performed, individual plan goals, behavior occurrences, incidents, safety concerns, home/vehicle maintenance issues, etc. in accordance with policy.

Immediately reports any concerns that affect the health, safety or well being of the individual.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully , an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (G.E.D.) Must successfully complete all D.D.A. required training. Adherence to specific training requirements based on the needs, preferences, and desires of the consumer. Adherence to required staffing ratio and supervision level based on the IP and the behavior plan. For consumers with 1:1 staffing rations, the D.S.P. must comply precisely with the supervision requirements stated in the IP and behavior plans since unsafe situations develop quickly and unpredictably and the D.S.P. is responsible for preventing these situations.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to consumers, clients and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

DRIVER’S LICENSE AND PROOF OF INSURANCE: A valid driver’s license with less that 4 points and proof of insurance are required for this position.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:  This position requires reliable transportation, criminal background check, annual TB test, communicable disease free and travel.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
